Gene Sauers Wins US Senior Open

Yes good guys can finish first, and second!

gene-sauers-us-openIt was about two years ago at this same US Senior Open that I first met Gene Sauers and Pat Robertson.  That was a very lucky day for me.  Not because I’m claiming any influence on Gene’s win because I’m definitely NOT.  If I had any influence at all it was very little. There is nothing I could tell Gene Sauers that he doesn’t already know.  Not because this time the good swing won, (as mentioned in the video I did in 2014 below) but that I met two of the best guys you could ever have a friendship with.

I can actually feel it in my bones what it is like to spend practically your entire life in golf hoping for a bright moment here and there and I got one when I met Pat Robertson and Gene Sauers.  Especially Pat!  You ask who is Pat Robertson?  No, not the preacher.  Pat is probably one of Gene’s best friends throughout life and a person with a keen understanding of the golf business and financial planning and knows Gene like his closest brother.  He is the best true blue friend to Gene Sauers.

Gene started playing golf on tour at the age of 19.  He is a long time veteran who has stayed out on tour and slugged it out with the best in the business.  He has never given up even after enduring adversity like a serious illness that cost him years on tour.  He also endured the constant travel away from his family and home in Savannah.  All for that quest or addiction of the one moment.  That one moment when it all pays off.  Miguel Jimenez misses an eight foot putt and Gene’s entire life of golf rests on a five foot putt AND putting is probably Gene’s least favorite thing to do.

I was on the phone with a very close friend of Miguel Jimenez, Juan Guillen and it was a very difficult moment for us both.  Two great guys battling it out. It was a shame to see either one lose.  Miguel Jimenez is a great guy.  Juan is a writer for golf magazines in Spain so I know he was very disappointed but he remained a gentleman throughout.  I also must admit that I always carry a very found memory of the friendships I had with so many great Spanish golfers like Monolo Pinero, Seve Ballesterios and his brother, Valentine Barrios, Jose Maria Canizares and so many others.

By the way, Juan is my exclusive contact for our new golf trips to Cuba so if you’re interested in joining us in sunny Cuba for great golf, cigars and rum please call me at 804-378-7456.  Juan also heads up a golf academy for Miguel Jimenez every January in Spain.

I have to admit we did have one secret weapon.  I told Gene to tell Jimenez that his golf shoes were ugly.  Zapatos feos!  Don’t know if he did tell him because Gene is just too nice.  I doubt he’d said anything.  I just wanted to help keep Gene loose.

I am so happy for both Gene and his pal Pat Robertson and appreciate their allowing me to participate in a very small way.  It makes a shining moment in my golf career to know I’m friends with an Open Champion.

Nice Guys Can Finish First – TWICE! In the Open!!!

Nice Guys Can Finish First – TWICE! In the Open!!!

Jay Woodson once again proves himself head and shoulders above the competition in the State Open of Virginia winning for the second time in a row.  I saw him on the golf course Sunday and he looks relaxed, seasoned and poised to do great things from here on.

Jay has all the skills and savvy to play at another level and I hope he does.  You couldn’t meat a nicer guy, now a Father, who conducts himself like a gentleman on and off the golf course.

All citizens of Powhatan should be proud of producing a great golfer with sound values and principals we should all try to achieve.

Just did a short analysis of Jay’s swing.  There’s not much to analyze???  It’s awfully good!

Sergio Garcia Should Control Emotions!

Sergio Garcia Should Control Emotions!

Not only does Sergio loose it on 17 at the TPC but know he makes a jackass out of himself.  When Fuzzy made is remark about fried chicken I excused it because Fuzzy was just kidding, had a drink in his hand and wasn’t malicious about it.

Sergio was displaying a hurtful comment on purpose and is not setting the example for junior golfers everywhere with his comments.  Sure Tiger and Sergio evidently don’t get along.  Sure Tiger has proven that he can be right nasty when being competitive.  BUT….you have to be mature enough to not let it get to you.

Whatever happened to, “you can’t control what others do, just control what you do.”  Concentrate on your golf game Sergio and don’t worry about Tiger or anyone else.  More importantly, you have disgraced the fine golfers from Spain that have been more than polite and very gentleman like in their demeanor.

I lived in Spain four years so I know from experience.  In Spain when you act like Sergio just did, they say your have no education.

Believe me I am NO fan of Tiger.  But….Sergio shame on you!

2011 U. S. Open Interview with Jimmy Barrett.

Here’s the interview we did live.  Remember this stuff is live!  I’m honored that Jimmy trusts me enough to behave myself on the air.  I tired to do my home work and still on Sunday morning, stand behind my statements.  The rough is way to short out there!  Too many greens hit in regulation from out of the rough.  What’s the positive for golf?  Well maybe having the younger long hitting field improves television ratings?  Maybe it attracts younger folks to the game of golf?

I can’t disagree with any of that….except.  Do it in the Doral Open!  The U.S. Open was always featured as the most difficult field with the most difficult conditions.  Bring out the best of the best in accuracy and nerve for the best golf.  It’s only once a year!

US Open Golf – Is That the U. S. Open – Where are the Americans?

I’m going to be on the air with Jimmy Barrett on WRVA Richmond in a few moments and I wanted to give an insight into the U.S. Open you might not hear anywhere else.  With the magic of the Internet I pulled up old scores from past U. S. Opens and compared them to today.  Yes the results of past leaders I am comparing today to is just the opening round, but still there is trend line here. I’m not happy with the results as an American!

In today’s first round results, of the top 15 golfers only 27% of them are Americans.  Only 27%!  In the year 2000, of the top 15 only 45% were Americans.  In 1990 some 87% were Americans.  In 1980 93% of the top 15 were American golfers!

I do not begrudge the foreign players for leading  in our National Open.  We have the same opportunity in the British Open.  The visitors have the right to lead if they play better.  After all , the golf ball and the golf course have no idea who is hitting the ball.

However, what has happened to our dominance? I can give you one possible contributor.  Title 9.  Men’s sports in Universities all over the country are being attacked by this philosophy that both Men and Women should be equal in sports scholarships  Men and women are not unequal, just different..thank God!  Great institutions like VMI do NOT have a Mens golf team because of Title 9.  Instead VMI had to field and pay for a girls rowing team!  I could coach that team.  A short trip of 90 miles over shark infested waters to Key West would do it.  Andale muchacha!!!

Of course there are probably a long list of other contributors, one being we’re getting lazy as a whole in this society.  Kids playing video games instead playing touch football in the street like we all did years ago.

Maybe the rest of the world is hungry for dominance in golf.  I know from experience that in Spain, a golf pro was the best playing caddy.  Just like boxers coming from bad neighborhoods and willing to suffer the training and punishment of boxing as a way out of the hood, Spanish players were willing to work hard on their golf game and move out of the caddy world to the playing opportunities open to them.

Whatever the reason, I personally don’t like it.  Wake up America!  We need a pep talk!
